Why Phoenix exists

Our story.

A community-owned Putney yoga studio rebuilt by the teachers and students who refused to let a much-loved place disappear.

How Phoenix began

A studio the community chose to rebuild.

When The House of Yoga closed unexpectedly, its community of teachers and students had a choice: let a much-loved Putney studio disappear, or build something new together.

We chose to rebuild. People pitched in pooling their time, experience and resources - and two crazy, emotional weeks later like a phoenix rising from the ashes Phoenix Yoga was born, opening on Upper Richmond Road in August 2023.

That beginning still shapes how we welcome people, choose our teachers and decide what the studio supports.

“I came in for the 21-day intro. I never planned to run a studio.”

Community-owned in practice

It changes the decisions we make.

Community ownership is not a slogan above the door. It is a practical commitment to keep listening, reinvesting and making room for more people.

25% surplus commitment

We commit 25% of any surplus to the studio and local initiatives.

Built with our members

Members helped Phoenix recover after the flood and continue to shape what happens here.

Teaching that keeps evolving

Feedback influences the timetable, our workshops and the teacher training we build together.

What this means for you

You can take part before you feel like you belong.

You are not walking into somebody else’s brand. New members are welcomed into a studio that is still shaped by the people who practise here.

What guides us

Three things we keep coming back to.

A Phoenix teacher offering options during class

Yoga for every body and everybody

Beginners and experienced students practise here, with options that respect the person in front of the teacher.

Well-being, in and out

Choose stronger movement, slower practice, breathwork or rest according to what you need that day.

Members of the Phoenix Yoga community

Shaped by our community

The schedule, events and wider work evolve through the experience and feedback of the people who come.

The people carrying it forward

Experience, care and plenty of different perspectives.

Phoenix is led and taught by people with different backgrounds, practices and reasons for being here. That depth is part of what makes the studio feel human.

“Yoga is a way of being — a path to finding our way back to ourselves, and to creating pathways with others and the world around us.”

Zara — leader and yoga teacher

“I teach yoga as an evolving inquiry into being human — where body, mind, spirit and environment are in constant dialogue.”

Kylie — leader and yoga teacher

“I feel privileged to share these practices and to help break down the barriers that keep yoga inaccessible to so many.”

Sarah — yoga teacher
